Winter Readiness
We haven’t seen snow or ice yet, but why wait until you do before you start thinking about your home heating system? Here are some winter readiness tips you take with your HVAC now to prepare for that first freeze:
- Clean the gutters to prevent built up icicles that could potentially fall into your outdoor unit when the ice breaks free, causing unnecessary damage.
- Schedule your preventive maintenance check on the furnace. Make sure everything is working properly before you really need it! Regular maintenance also ensures a long life from your heating system….longer than if it is never checked.
- Clean the gutters to prevent built up icicles that could potentially fall into your outdoor unit when the ice breaks free, causing unnecessary damage.
- Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors. First sign that you have a problem with a furnace may be a carbon monoxide (CO) leak. The problem with that is CO is colorless and odorless and very dangerous if not detected early. Place CO detectors in areas of the home where you are sure to hear them at any event of an alert.
- Have a heat pump? Not many in El Paso do. But, if you are one who does, make sure that all leaf debris is kept clear of your outdoor heat pump unit. This will enable the unit to run more efficiently or allow a technician quick and easy access to it for service if you are in need of repair.
- If you have a home that is not occupied year-round or you are away from home at anytime this for the winter, consider getting a smart Wi-Fi thermostat. Smart stats program themselves; then pay for themselves with energy savings. And, the convenience of checking in on your HVAC system and/or getting early alerts if something starts to break down is super convenient and invaluable.
