Carbon monoxide is a natural by-product of anything “fuel-burning”. And, it is very dangerous because it’s colorless, odorless and deadly at a certain point.
Every time that your furnace goes on, gas is produced. If everything is working properly, the carbon monoxide that is produced by your furnace’s burners is contained within your system’s heat exchanger. After the gas leaves your heat exchanger, it is sent through your furnace’s vented flue and safely carried outside of your home. But, if that venting system isn’t working properly because it has either deteriorated over time or is blocked, carbon monoxide can leak into the home.
The absolute safest way to avoid carbon monoxide leaks from your furnace is to have your fall furnace maintenance check-up. Total Air will inspect the entire system for anything that could lead to a potential carbon monoxide leak, including examining your heat exchanger and all parts for any signs of wear, cracks and leaks.
